Iran Thinks Time Is on Its Side

Overnight, Iran and Israel exchanged direct strikes once again, with Iranian ballistic missiles targeting Israel and Israeli airstrikes reported near Tehran. At the same time, President Trump called for an immediate ceasefire while reports emerged that Israel may have been aggressively gathering intelligence on U.S. negotiations with Iran.

But the real story may be deeper.

According to leading international relations scholar Robert Pape, states expecting defeat usually narrow the battlefield. Iran is doing the opposite. Tehran has resumed direct missile attacks, threatened wider regional escalation, increased pressure on Gulf states, and appears increasingly willing to test whether time is working in its favor.
